Year-End Car Deals 2026: Models With the Biggest December Discounts

By Daily Wisdom · · 4 min read

December is traditionally the best month of the year to buy a new car. Dealers are chasing monthly, quarterly and annual sales targets at the same time, and automakers want leftover model-year inventory gone. Edmunds data has long shown December with the biggest average discounts off sticker price, often around 6%. Here is where the deepest discounts are most likely to show up this year, and how to make sure you actually get them.

Why December deals are different

  • Stacked deadlines: salespeople, managers and dealerships all have year-end bonuses tied to volume.
  • Model-year changeover: by December most 2027 models are on lots, so remaining 2026 models are "last year's" cars and easier to discount.
  • Holiday sales events: automakers often add cash rebates or low-rate financing that run through the first business days of January.
  • The last week matters most: historically, the final days of December, when deadlines are closest, have produced the deepest discounts.

Specific December offers are usually announced in late November or early December, so treat the categories below as a shopping list, not a guarantee.

Models likely to carry the biggest December discounts

1. Electric vehicles

EVs have carried some of the largest incentives on the market since the federal $7,500 clean-vehicle tax credit ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. Automakers have filled the gap with their own cash. In October 2026, deal listings on TrueCar showed five-figure cash offers on some models, such as $13,500 in customer cash plus 0% financing for 72 months on the 2026 Kia Niro EV, along with offers on the Kia EV9 and Volkswagen ID.4. If an EV fits how you drive, December is likely to be an excellent time to negotiate.

2. Full-size pickups

Full-size trucks are high-profit, high-inventory vehicles, and they regularly carry big rebates at year-end. October listings already showed thousands of dollars in cash on models such as the Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

3. Large and luxury SUVs

Luxury brands often discount heavily in December to hit annual targets, especially on large SUVs. October listings showed $7,500 in cash on the Lincoln Navigator and incentives on the Infiniti QX80, and luxury electric models carried some of the largest cash offers anywhere.

4. Outgoing 2026 models

Any model whose 2027 version is already in showrooms is a candidate. Ask the dealer specifically for remaining 2026 inventory, and check whether the 2027 version adds anything you actually need.

5. Sedans and slower sellers

Midsize and full-size sedans, and any model with lots of unsold inventory in your area, tend to carry larger discounts than popular compact SUVs and hybrids, which often sell close to sticker.

What usually is not discounted much

High-demand compact SUVs, popular hybrids and newly redesigned models often see little room off the sticker price even in December. If you have your heart set on one, focus on financing deals, your trade-in value and dealer add-ons rather than a big cash discount. Cash rebate or 0% financing?

Many offers make you choose between cash back and low-rate financing. To compare them:

  1. Get a loan preapproval from your bank or credit union before you shop.
  2. Calculate total interest on that loan, then compare it with the cash rebate you would give up for 0% financing.
  3. Remember that the longest-term 0% deals usually require excellent credit.

If you are paying cash, the rebate is almost always the better deal.

How to get the best year-end price

  1. Shop the last week of December, and if possible a weekday when showrooms are quieter.
  2. Ask for the "out-the-door" price in writing, including taxes, title, registration and every fee.
  3. Email several dealers with the exact model and trim and let them compete.
  4. Negotiate the car, the trade-in and the financing separately.
  5. Say no to add-ons you did not ask for, such as paint protection, nitrogen-filled tires or etching.
  6. Check the build date on leftover models and make sure the car has not been sitting long enough to need new tires or a battery.
  7. Read the rebate fine print: many year-end offers end on the first business days of January.
