Best SUVs for Seniors in 2027: Easy Entry, Top Safety Ratings, Low Ownership Costs

By Daily Wisdom · · 5 min read

The right SUV for an older driver is not the biggest or the fanciest. It is the one you can get into without twisting, see out of clearly, and afford to keep on the road. We started with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) highest award, Top Safety Pick+, then narrowed the field to models that also make entry, visibility and ownership costs easy.

How we chose

  • Top safety rating: every pick earned an IIHS 2026 Top Safety Pick+, the institute's highest award. Several awards apply only to vehicles built after a certain date, which we note below.
  • Easy entry and exit: a seat that sits close to hip height, so you slide in rather than climb up or drop down.
  • Good visibility: large windows and a clear view of the road.
  • Reasonable ownership costs: sensible pricing, available hybrid versions and solid warranty coverage.

Most 2027 models carry over largely unchanged from 2026, and IIHS awards are often extended to the next model year when a vehicle does not change. Always confirm the rating for the exact model year and build date you are buying.

Best small SUVs for seniors

Subaru Forester

Why it works: The Forester has long been a favorite of older drivers for its tall, upright cabin, big windows and thin roof pillars, which make it one of the easiest small SUVs to see out of. Standard all-wheel drive helps in snow and rain, and a hybrid version is available. Starting price: about $29,995 before destination.

Hyundai Tucson

Why it works: A roomy back seat, a comfortable ride and simple controls, plus available hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. Hyundai's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty for the original owner is one of the best ways to keep surprise repair bills low. Starting price: about $29,200.

Kia Sportage

Why it works: One of the largest cargo areas in its class, which helps when you are loading groceries, a walker or a folding wheelchair, plus the same long powertrain warranty as Hyundai. The Top Safety Pick+ applies to vehicles built after May 2025. Starting price: about $28,690.

Mazda CX-50 and CX-5

Why they work: Both earned Top Safety Pick+. They offer upscale interiors and controls that are easy to use without hunting through screens. The CX-50 sits a little lower and wider, which some drivers find easier to step into, and it offers a hybrid. Starting price: about $29,900 for the CX-50.

Honda HR-V

Why it works: The HR-V is the budget pick: smaller and easier to park, with a straightforward dashboard. It suits drivers who mostly run errands around town. The award covers both the 2026 and 2027 model years.

Best midsize SUVs for seniors

Subaru Outback

Why it works: The Outback has long been popular with older drivers for its car-like step-in height, standard all-wheel drive and generous cargo room. The 2026 redesign is taller and more SUV-like than before, so do the sit test described below to make sure the new seat height suits you.

Hyundai Santa Fe

Why it works: A boxy shape means wide door openings and lots of headroom, and the big rear liftgate makes loading easy. A hybrid is available, and it carries Hyundai's long powertrain warranty.

Kia Sorento

Why it works: A practical midsize SUV with an optional third row for visiting grandchildren, plus hybrid options. The Top Safety Pick+ applies to vehicles built after September 2025.

Honda Passport

Why it works: Two rows, a roomy cabin and a commanding view of the road for drivers who want something more substantial than a compact SUV.

Best luxury pick: Lexus NX

The Lexus NX earned a 2026 Top Safety Pick+ and pairs a quiet, comfortable ride with Lexus's reputation for reliability. A hybrid model is widely available and is easy on fuel.

Keeping ownership costs low

  • Warranty: Hyundai and Kia cover the powertrain for 10 years or 100,000 miles for the original owner, with 5-year/60,000-mile basic coverage. Most other brands offer 3-year/36,000-mile basic and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage.
  • Hybrids: the Forester, Tucson, Sportage, CX-50, Santa Fe, Sorento and NX all offer hybrid versions that cut fuel costs for drivers who log many miles.
  • Insurance: get quotes before you buy. Premiums vary widely by model, and many insurers discount policies for completing an approved mature-driver course.
  • Timing: year-end is often the best time to negotiate. See year-end car deals for 2026.

Test-drive checklist for older drivers

  1. Do the "sit test." Stand beside the open door. The seat cushion should be roughly at hip height, so you can sit and swing your legs in.
  2. Check the door opening and whether there is a grab handle you can actually reach.
  3. Adjust the power seat height and steering wheel to find a position with a clear view over the hood.
  4. Try the controls. Physical knobs for volume and climate are easier to use while driving than touchscreen menus.
  5. Look for blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert and a clear rearview camera.
  6. Open the liftgate and check the load height for groceries or mobility aids.
  7. Drive it at night if you can, to judge headlights and dashboard glare.

Prices are approximate starting MSRPs as published for the 2026 model year and can change, so confirm current pricing with a dealer. If you are budgeting on a fixed income, our look at the 2027 Social Security COLA shows how much more your monthly check will be.
