Social Security Payment Schedule 2027: Every Deposit Date, Month by Month

By Daily Wisdom · · 5 min read

Social Security does not pay everyone on the same day. Your deposit date depends on when you started receiving benefits, whether you also get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and, for most people, your birthday. Below is every 2027 payment date in one place, plus the months when SSI recipients will see two deposits, or none at all.

Which payment group are you in?

  • SSI recipients are paid on the 1st of the month.
  • The "3rd of the month" group is paid on the 3rd. It includes people who began receiving Social Security before May 1997, people who receive both Social Security and SSI, and people whose state pays their Medicare premiums.
  • Everyone else (most retirees, survivors and people on Social Security Disability Insurance) is paid on a Wednesday, set by birth date:
    • Born on the 1st–10th: second Wednesday
    • Born on the 11th–20th: third Wednesday
    • Born on the 21st–31st: fourth Wednesday

If a payment date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the money arrives on the business day before. If you receive benefits as a spouse, your date is based on the birthday of the worker whose record you are paid on, not your own.

* Paid early because the usual date falls on a weekend or federal holiday. January 1, 2027 is New Year's Day, January 3 is a Sunday, May 1 and April 3 are weekends, August 1 and July 3 are weekends, and October 3 is a Sunday. None of the Wednesday payment dates in 2027 lands on a federal holiday, so the birthday groups are paid on schedule all year.

Months with two SSI payments, and months with none

Because SSI moves to the previous business day when the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, some calendar months contain two SSI deposits and others contain none. That matters for budgeting: the second deposit is next month's money, not a bonus.

  • January 2027: no SSI deposit, because January's payment arrives December 31, 2026.
  • April 2027: two deposits: April 1 (April's payment) and April 30 (May's payment).
  • May 2027: no SSI deposit.
  • July 2027: two deposits: July 1 and July 30 (August's payment).
  • August 2027: no SSI deposit.
  • December 2027: two deposits: December 1 and December 30, which is January 2028's payment, paid early because New Year's Day 2028 is observed on Friday, December 31.

The first 2027 payments include the COLA

Benefits rise 3.6% in 2027, and the increase starts with the payments in the January row above. That means SSI recipients and the 3rd-of-month group will see their higher amount on December 31, 2026, while birthday-group beneficiaries see it on their January Wednesday. For the dollar impact, read our breakdown of how much your check will change with the 2027 COLA.

Remember that the number you see in your bank account is the net amount after any Medicare premium deduction. The 2027 Part B premium had not been announced as of mid-October, so your January deposit may differ slightly from a simple 3.6% bump. Our guide to Medicare changes to check before 2027 explains what could change.

What to do if a payment does not arrive

  1. Wait three business days. SSA asks people to allow three additional mail or business days before reporting a missing payment.
  2. Check with your bank or, if you use a Direct Express card, check your card balance.
  3. Look at your my Social Security account for your payment history and any notices.
  4. Contact SSA if the money still has not arrived.

Electronic payment is required for most federal benefits and is the most reliable way to get paid on time. If you still receive paper checks, switching to direct deposit or a Direct Express card avoids mail delays, which can be worst around the December holidays.

Quick budgeting tips for 2027

  • Set bill due dates a few days after your deposit date. Many utilities and card issuers will move a due date on request.
  • If you get SSI, treat the April 30, July 30 and December 30 deposits as next month's money.
  • Expect early January deposits on December 31 if you are in the SSI or 3rd-of-month group.
  • Keep a small buffer in checking for months when a holiday shifts your payment.

You can download the agency's own calendar from the Social Security Administration's 2027 schedule of payments.
